PROJECT REPORTS DURING ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESS

SR-62 – New Sidewalks, New Raised Median Islands, & Utility Undergrounding

Yucca Valley, CA

Client: Willdan, Town of Yucca Valley

SR-62 / Yucca Valley

Increasing development along the Town of Yucca Valley commercial corridor and rising popularity of nearby desert destinations have increased traffic volumes along SR-62, Twenty Nine Palms Highway.
SR-62 carries significant volumes of truck and recreational traffic as well as military convoys. This increased traffic demand has resulted in traffic delays and increased vehicular conflicts. The Town applied for a grant under the Governor’s TCRP and requested additional grant monies to include installation of raised medians and sidewalks along SR-62 to reduce traffic accidents caused by pedestrians in the roadway and left turns crossing oncoming traffic, respectively. The Town Council decided also to improve aesthetics and safety along SR-62 by undergrounding some electrical poles that are located close to the roadway. The Town was awarded a $3.2 million grant to construct these improvements.

Project involved the preparation of a Project Report for the construction of sidewalks, raised median islands, and utility undergrounding on the SR-62. The project limits were from La Honda Way to Dumosa Avenue (2.5 miles). Willdan prepared the geometrics and the environmental documentation while Civil Works Engineers prepared the Project Report, cost estimates, storm water data report,
and location hydraulic study. Construction cost was estimated at $5.9 million. Project funding was on hold during the state budget crisis for 2 years during which Caltrans policy changed from metric to English units.
