With the City
of Downey needing additional park space and athletic fields, the City obtained an existing surface parking lot from a local business. Under a separate contract, the City removed the asphalt concrete pavement, removed contaminated soil and imported new ‘clean’ soil. Development of the site included a public park with athletic fields and
a NASA themed museum.
Civil Works Engineers was involved in the development of the public park. Site improvements included two soccer fields, two baseball
fields, a concession building and an adjacent access road, and parking lot.
CWE was responsible for the coordination and preparation of the field survey, base mapping, site layout, site grading and drainage, and new utilities. The access road was designed to direct storm runoff into the medians to provide treatment and infiltration prior to entering the storm drain system. Coordination was required with a separate City designed storm drain project. The City project constructed a detention basin under one of the proposed soccer fields and required
continuous close coordination with the site grading and drainage. Site design also required coordination with
a museum complex and adjacent construction of a new medical center complex.
