Early College and Academic Technical School
Long Beach, CA
The Long Beach Unified School District decided to demolish the existing DeMille
Middle School and construct a new specialized high school in its place. The new
specialized high school was named Early College and Academic Technical School
(ECATS). The proposed new site improvements included seven new buildings, two
surface parking lots, athletic fields, a bus drop-off, and hard courts. Additionally, a
City well water transmission pipe needed relocation as its existing location was in
conflict with the new facilities.
Significant site grading was required due to the poor existing soil conditions.
Extensive overexcavation, material replacement, and compaction was required under
the buildings. An existing underground drainage system was not present adjacent to
the site, therefore all site drainage was required to exit the site and use the public
streets as the drainage facility. Therefore, the project drainage was designed to
utilize site infiltration to treat storm water runoff and reduce volume of runoff before
entering the street. An infiltration basin was designed into the play fields and
pervious pavers were installed in the parking lots.
New water and sewer services to facilitate the new school, and new street driveways were also
installed, requiring coordination with the City of Long Beach.
